Within the broader scope of the Carbohydrate Competence Centre (CCC), the CarboHealth project aims to investigate the potential health benefits of carbohydrates such as prebiotics and also their synergistic effects when combined with probiotics.
To gain further knowledge of these effects, the decision to develop a toolbox based on in vitro screenings and in vivo (animal) models has been chosen. More specifically, Winclove investigates the combination of their probiotic strains and several prebiotic components to find the best synergistic effects. Certain combinations are further studied in in vitro models to determine functional improvements such as strengthening the gut barrier function, and influencing the immune system.
In this 4-year public-private partnership Winclove is collaborating with the companies FrieslandCampina, AVEBE, Sensus, Nutreco, and Nutricia and the knowledge institutes Wageningen University, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, University Medical Centre Groningen and Food and Biobased Research, all based in the Netherlands. The project is running till the beginning of 2018.
