Mind, Mood & Microbes covers multiple scientific perspectives on the microbiota-gut-brain axis

Top scientific experts from academia and industry gathered at the historical KIT Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam for the much-anticipated 4th International Conference on Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis, known as “Mind, Mood & Microbes”. The in-person event, held on May 10-11th 2023, followed a virtual edition of the conference in 2021.

Discussing the Gut Brain axis: keynote lecture’s, presentations, posters & roundtables

The 26 speakers at the conference came from fields as diverse as neuroscience, pharmacology, immunology, integrative physiology, and nutritional psychiatry. Over the course of the two days, each expert gave a unique perspective on how microorganisms exert influence on various aspects of behavior, cognition, and mental health.

The conference’s opening keynote lecture by Prof. Felice Jacka highlighted the role of diet in mental health, and how the gut microbiota is bringing about mechanistic insights. A second keynote lecture by Prof. Jonathan Kipnis delved into immunology and how microbiota-derived molecules manage to affect the brain in spite of the protective blood-brain barrier.

Several of the speakers shared cutting-edge, unpublished work that enhances the collective knowledge in this scientific niche. And while many of the talks went deep into mechanisms, the 5 ‘applied biotechnology’ talks showcased industry-led applications of the science that exist today.

Nearly 50 scientific posters were on display for the poster sessions, providing a way for early career researchers to showcase their work. Based on the lively roundtable discussions and conversations between participants, the conference achieved its main aim; fostering productive scientific dialogue on the many-faceted relationship between the gut microbiota and the brain.

A community

The conference was supported and planned by a committee of 13 leading scientists in the field, 10 of whom attended the event and volunteered as session chairs and moderators.

Winclove, the founding partner, partnered with Lallemand as a co-founding partner to make this event a reality. Engagement with the scientific community continues via the Mind, Mood & Microbes social media channels (Twitter and Instagram), with the next in-person event being planned for 2025.
