In our previous article On our way to a green laboratory, we shared how Winclove is embedding sustainability into every aspect of our work. From energy use to waste reduction, our labs are an important focus in this journey.
That journey is moving forward. We expect to achieve our Green Lab certification soon, though the level is still to be determined. By 2030, our goal is to have all laboratories certified at the highest level: Green. Sustainability isn’t something we do on the side, it’s at the heart of everything we do, including our scientific work.
Key focus areas
In recent months, the Green Lab certification ambition has gained serious momentum. A session with lab employees revealed that waste reduction and processing are key concerns. Understandably so: globally, labs generate around 5.5 million tons of waste each year. A major problem and therefore a major opportunity.
That’s why we’re focusing on:
- Collaborating with suppliers to explore whether glassware like pre-filled bottles (PFZ) and tube racks can be returned or reused.
- Smarter waste separation, despite the limitations of current waste streams in Amsterdam. Hard plastics in particular deserve better separation from biohazard waste.
But this is just the beginning. Behind this initiative are four dedicated Winclovers who are fully committed. Time to introduce two of them…
