Our lab has achieved the highest Green Lab certification. Becoming certified ‘Green’ in one go, a result we are proud of. This underscores our commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Why this matters
The certification confirms that we meet the strictest standards for sustainable laboratory practices. For you as our business partner, this means working with an organisation that takes responsibility and continuously invests in a greener future.
How we made it happen
We implemented a series of measures to minimise our impact:
- A Green Lab Team that coordinates and makes all sustainability activities visible.
- Waste separation with clearly labelled streams.
- Smart purchasing and sharing of materials via a central list to avoid duplicate orders.
- Repairing, donating or refurbishing equipment.
- Preference for products with recognised eco-labels such as ACT and Energy Star.
- Water-saving by installing flow restrictors on taps where technically possible.
- Visual reminders to switch off equipment and activate energy-saving modes.
- 100% renewable electricity through solar panels and green suppliers.
- Cloud First policy for data storage.
- An e-waste programme where old laptops are wiped and donated to local charities.
Sustainable steps through collaboration
This milestone would not have been possible without the involvement and commitment of our lab colleagues. Their active participation and survey input enabled us to achieve the highest level ‘Green’, on our first attempt and demonstrated that colleagues across all departments are fully engaged. And we are not stopping there: from this year onwards, all lab employees will follow an annual sustainability training. We are also joining the Freezer Challenge.
What is the Freezer Challenge and why are we joining?
The Freezer Challenge is an international programme organised by My Green Lab that helps labs save energy by using our freezers more efficiently.
Sebastiaan de Vos, Fermentation Lab Technician, explains why we are participating and what it brings:
‘The Freezer Challenge encourages us to look critically at how we use our cold storage. By making small adjustments such as fine-tuning temperature settings, defrosting equipment more often and organising samples more efficiently, we can significantly reduce energy consumption. These improvements are easy to implement and deliver clear benefits for both the environment and our operational costs.’
Together we make an impact
Sustainability is a shared responsibility. By sharing knowledge and experience, we inspire each other to take steps that not only benefit the environment but also strengthen operational efficiency and reputation.
