B Corp launches new and stricter standards

On April 8, 2025, B Lab launched the most significant update to the B Corp standards since their start. The changes are a direct response to increasing regulatory demands and growing criticism that the previous point-based system was too flexible and lacked rigor.

From point scoring to mandatory impact

Under the old model, companies needed to score at least 80 points on the B Impact Assessment (BIA) to become B Corp certified. The new standards eliminate this point system. Instead, companies must now meet a set of non-negotiable ‘Year 0’ requirements to achieve certification, with further requirements introduced at Year 3 and Year 5.

This shift emphasizes continuous, measurable progress. Rather than checking boxes to reach a one-time score, businesses are now required to develop long-term roadmaps that guide their ongoing improvement.

Increased credibility and fewer loopholes

The new framework is designed to:

  • Align with evolving regulations such as the European Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence (CSDDD/ECGT) directive.
  • Provide a clear and credible pathway for companies to demonstrate real impact.
  • Eliminate the ability to offset poor performance in one area with excellence in another.

Seven impact topics

To become (and remain) B Corp certified, companies must now demonstrate strong performance across seven clearly defined impact topics:

Why this matters

The updated B Corp standards mark a significant step forward in defining what it means to be a truly impact-driven organisation. By replacing the flexible point-based system with clear, mandatory requirements, B Lab reinforces the credibility of the certification and sets a new benchmark for responsible business.

Since 2020, the number of health-related B Corps in Europe has more than doubled. With the launch of B Lab Standards V2.0 earlier this year, B Corps can become true impact-driven leaders in their sectors, through intentional impact performance on all aspects of their business.”
