Your role

Within the Microbial Discovery & Development team, you will be responsible for the high-troughput screening of bacterial strains isolated from clinical study material, around growth and safety. This involves cultivating these aerobic and anaerobic bacterial strains on a small scale. All with the aim of characterisation and optimal yield. Here you can think of testing different yeast and carbon sources during cultivation. This is done in a BSL2 lab to ensure safety.

In the team, you are the link between the isolation of interesting strains and the lab scale fermentations. You transfer your results and recommendations to your team members so that the bacteria can be analysed and fermented on a larger scale. You collaborate a lot with other labs within the organisation for analysis and scale-up to production. In this way, you have a very diverse job, working mainly in the lab as a microbiological analyst. We recently introduced a MALDI-TOF device at the lab. A library needs to be set up for this in the near future, making this a (temporary) part of the job.

Your main tasks are:

  • Medium optimisation on 96-well plate scale.
  • Prebiotic screening.
  • Determining which bacteria are suitable for further research and production.
  • Identification with MADLI-TOF MS.

What do we ask of you?

For this position, we are looking for an enthusiastic but critical person who meets the following requirements:

    • you have a completed college or mbo education and 5 years’ work experience in microbiology or biotechnology or a related field;
    • you have a passion for R&D and working with bacteria;
    • you have knowledge of and experience with microbiological techniques such as microscopy and bacterial cultivation;
    • you are eager to learn and show initiative;
    • you can work independently in a lab and have a collegial attitude;
    • you speak good Dutch and basic English;
    • experience with MALDI-TOF and/or HPLC analysis is an advantage;
    • initiative, communication skills, independent and structured worker.
